I found an older model (2005) of this head on consignment and had to try it since I’d never run across an Evans amp yet had heard of their reputation. The first plus is the compact and light weight of both the amp and the speaker cabinet (I have an Evans 12″). Once I tried it, I took the 2 amps that I’d been using for both my pedal steel and my accordion back in to that consignment store as I found that I can get the perfect sound on either instrument with just the one amp (I’ve got my settings for both saved as pictures on my phone for easy switch over). Another thing that’s rare these days and worth mentioning is the stellar customer service Evans provides. I’d asked a simple question regarding the tonal differences in their amp models and got a phone call from Scot who was very generous with his time in helping me dial in the sound for my accordion on the amp and showing me some of the techniques of getting a big clean sound with a natural tone. Getting great personalized service like this when I didn’t even have a product under warranty is something that would certainly make sure that I’d buy another one of these amps in a heartbeat!

I already have a trusty RE200 which I use mostly for jazz and electric classical, etc. However, I have a number of speaker cab configs (2 x 10, 1 x 12, 1 x 15) and wanted to have the Evans AH200 tone across these cabs for versatility. The 2 x 10 has Eminence Ragin Cajun speakers in it and sounds amazing with the AH200 for cover work. I am more of a clean player than overdrive – although pedals work just fine with these amps. Evans is bullet proof and you’ll never leave a gig disappointed that your sound was muddy or weak. And you’ll never have to deal with microphonic tubes No other amp has the feel for me like an Evans. In a nutshell – think of the best sounding Fender Twin you’ve heard, add far more tone sculpting options plus onboard subtle chorus and flange – and reduce weight by about 60 pounds – that’s the Evans AH200.

I have been playing since 1963 and have used a LOT of amps. The first time I turned on the Evans, I knew that this was the sound I had always wanted. The clarity, the detail, the wide range of tonal colors, it just makes the guitar sing. From jazz to country twang, this amp does it all. I play with a group that plays songs from 9 decades, and this amp covers any tone that I want. Pedals sound great through it also. I can’t recommend this unit too highly. Scot is very helpful and will take the time to make sure you are satisfied with your sound. It has spoiled me for all other amps. I use an Eminence Lil Texas with a Flitecab cabinet, so cab and amp totals about 20 lbs. My other amps sit in the closet. Thanks, Evans!

I purchased this amp about a year ago and it has met all of my expectations. It has a beautiful clean tone and has an ability to dial in all sorts of colors, really EQ shapes, with the controls like body, depth and expand. It even works convincingly with my full drive 2 overdrive. I get it great sound with my 175 and can dial in a variety of great tones with my strat as well from jazz to rock. I even get a nice acoustic sound using my classical with a K and K pick up and preamp. Scot has been great to work with and has helped me with specific settings for various gig situations. He has made every effort to answer any questions I have and help the amp work for me. Many thanks.

I bought this 2010 head from guitar center used in mint condition. I had previously used Acoustic Image, LAB, Yamaha, Roland and many different tube amps. I play mostly laminated Archtop, ibanez jsm100, es295, and tele for jazz, swing and sometimes a little rock with pedals. It performs great with all of these tasks, I just change the speaker cab depending on the style. It is like the tightest, lightest, most quiet Twin but has more than just that tone. Great on single notes, puts out all the notes of complex chords, no apparent compression like on other SS amps. The EQ is different than a fender but way more versatile. Very low noise floor, no hiss or noise at all. I prefer digital reverb and it is included with a dwell control. All of this without mentioning its diminutive size and weight. Have not used the line out yet. Very satisfying purchase. Just need to find a matching gig bag as it was not included with my used purchase. Thanks for making such a great product

Since February, I used my AH200 quite a lot. Super is all I can say. Here is the speakers I’ve been using. To keep the portable and light weight aspect of the all thing I chose two eminence beta 12 that I put in Kustom defender 12 cabinets. Those are small open back cabinet weighing altogethe 23 pounds each with the beta 12 in. A very moderate price range for an effective solution. Thanks again Scott Bernard

  7. Bernard Beck

I received my AH200 last week. Haven’t tried it in a gig situation sofar but I did try it with all my instruments and waooooow what a sound. On the stringmaster, telecaster and Georgeboard I knew it would be awesome, and it is. Now with electroacoustic instrument I was thinking there might be some feedback issues are strange piezo-deraillements, well no, everything sounds so clear. My Gibson J100 equipped with K&K trinity is gorgeous, my travelsteel also equipped with K&K trinity sounds out of this world. And to top it all THE IMPOSSIBLE TO AMPLIFY DOBRO comes out great. So I just have to say thank you for your work and kindness Scot and Julia. I’ll keep you posted on what this little beast does while rehearsing with my pals and in gig situation. Bernard

Let’s forget -for just a second- that this is amp is about the size and weight of a medium book, and let’s just talk about the sound. It’s not easy to find an amp that has the warmth and the body that we associate with tube amps, but that also has the ton of clean headroom that is often needed to get a good jazz sound in all size of venues (which is impossible to get in a tube amp, except if you have a strong back that is able to lift a high-powered tube amp!). It’s amazing to have such a full-bodied sound, that remains crystal clear even when playing chord-solos… this is something that I didn’t know I was missing until I heard it! Also, the EQ is something worth mentioning, as it allows you to pinpoint some frequencies that can be troublesome in some rooms; this is unique to this design, and truly makes a world of difference allowing you to finding the sound that you are really looking for. This is one versatile amp that has more that just one usable sound! If you combine this absolutely amazing sound (including a beautiful built-in reverb) with a truly flexible EQ, and you now also take into account that this is an extremely portable amp, I truly can’t think of any other option in the market that even comes close to the amazing AH200. Also, I must mention the great customer service that Evans provides, and it really means a lot to work with a company that is “standing firm” behind it’s products. Thanks Scot for all your help and for an absolutely incredible amp that is now an important part of my sound… that I can also take in flying gigs! Best wishes, – Pedro

  9. Gene Ess

Had the pleasure to pick up the AH200 to use for some important gigs this week. Great sound and in combination with a tube amp in a stereo setup, the timbre of my guitar was rich and complex and very woody. Fellow guitar players came up and told me how beautiful and ROUND and FAT my sound is. Very happy with the amp. Thanks, Scot.

  10. Wanderson Bomfim

I own this head and it is just perfect. I play my Benedetto Bravo on it and it sounds like I am in heaven. I would like to have more setting or reviews to search more sounds on it. Is that possible? Could someone help me? Thanks!!!

  11. Tommy Rocco

I have owned the AH200 for aprox. 2 years. The sound is tight and warm with all the power that I need. I play a Flanders Custom Archtop guitar and from the time I turned on the AH200 it took less than a minute to find “MY TONE”. THE SEARCH HAS ENDED.

  12. Tony Shahov

I’ve been an owner of AH200 and RES200 for about a year and absolutely adore it. The beauty of this amp is that it is catching the uniqueness of every instrument. Another quality is that clean sound is likely to be bigger that anything you can get with effects. Together these qualities are absolutely unique. I played my various solid/hollow body guitars as well as electric violin, used my effects with it but still the best is just plugging your instrument and go. To add to this, my favorite guitar with this amp is customized Godin LG. I also own Supro Belmont, great tube clean sound amplifier with built-in compressor. But AH200 is still the best when I want just my instrument and me.

  13. Dave Kirk (UK)

I have been using a AH200 as both a preamp for studio use and as a full amp at live gigs for a few years now. As a professional pedal steel player and Guitarist, I find the amp to be brilliant. It delivers a massive punch using any speaker setup. It’s bad enough having to lug around a heavy double neck steel Guitar, so having such a light weight amp to carry in strapped over your sholder is a real bonus.

I have worked with Evans on web development work for a few years, and this amp was one of the things I received from Evans around 3 -4 years when I began working for them. Ever since I heard it, I have been spoiled by its incredibly clean and warm sound. I am primarily a hard rock/metal player, and though this amp does not provide that metal grit, its incredible cleanliness and precision allows me to have a portable sound beast. A beast which cleans up like no other amp I have tried, and which takes amp simulation very very very well for when I need to have my high gain amps on the go, along with my favorite clean amp.
