SE300

$1,798.00

At 32 pounds, the SE300 is the worldwide standard for live amplification. This amazing combo amp is an upgraded version of the Compactra amplifier that Jim Evans built in the sixties. When asked about the secret of his tone, Jim would say, “If I have a secret, it’s staying with the sound that I was pleased with fifty years ago and not constantly bouncing around from one fad to the next. I try for the same sound, not just increasingly lighter weight.”

At 32 pounds, the SE300 is the worldwide standard for live amplification. This amazing combo amp is an upgraded version of the Compactra amplifier that Jim Evans built in the sixties. I try for the same sound, not just increasingly lighter weight.”

The SE300 uses a single 15 inch speaker to deliver a balanced full range tone from shimmering highs to lows that you can feel in your chest. Warm and Hot inputs allow you to quickly change the preamp’s input and output levels by 10dB.  This gives you more control over your sound.  Its unique open back cabinet enhances the low end without muffling the highs. Although, originally designed for steel guitar, this amp will work well with most other feedback resistant stringed instruments.

Today’s SE300 keeps every promise Jim Evans ever made about tone, in a cabinet that doesn’t require a roadie! Your price for the SE300 is only $1798.  Call or click to order yours today.

I had the pleasure to work with Jim Evans. He was the smartest man I have known working on electronics. He spent month after month developing an amp for the Steel Guitar. I am glad that his legacy lives on after his departing. Oh he played on the Louisana Hay Ride. He and his wife took Elvis Pressley under their wing when he was at the L. Hay Ride.

I first began playing through Evans amplifiers during the mid-late 70’s. I recently contacted Scot Buffington at Evans Custom Amplifiers and ordered a new, Evans SE500. Both, Scot and Julia Buffington are two of the nicest, most courteous and considerate people that you will ever meet. Scot accepted my order, gave me an exact build and delivery date and my new Evans SE500 was delivered by Fed Ex exactly on time. It was very well packaged and inside the box was a personal “thank you” note from Scot. At first glance, the Evans cabinet is beautifully constructed of maple ply and perfectly covered with black tolex. The new style gray grill cloth adds a stunning overall look and the outer hardware has a mirror finish. I already had my Show Pro steel guitar set up and waiting for the arrival of my new Evans SE500. It only took a very short time to dial in a warm but yet, crystal clear tone with the help of the suggested sample settings in the operating manual. All of the “eq” controls are simple and intuitive. The onboard digital reverb is reminiscent of those found in “high-end” recording studios. Afterward, I tweaked a little, here and there, for the most beautiful tone I’ve ever experienced during my 45+ years of playing steel guitar. The SE500 Evans reproduces the natural sound of my guitar beautifully, more so than any other amplifier I’ve ever played through or owned. The Evans SE500 is the epitome of powerful, warm and clean tone.

Why did I waste my time and money on all those other amps? Got my new Evans SE300 today. Took it to the studio and spent about an hour with Scot on the phone going thru the settings. I couldn’t be more pleased with the sound I’m getting. It takes a special amp to make a pedal steel sound right, finally mine sounds right! This is all the amp I’ll ever need, but if I need a new one, it will be an Evans from Scot.

I just purchased a new Evans SE300 steel guitar amp from Scot and Julia Buffington. I’m just passing it along for what its worth. The sound is fantastic. I have used Evans Amps for 20 years. This to me is the cream of the crop. Scot spent 1 hour 15 minutes on the phone with me setting the controls correctly for the right sound. I had a friend on the phone between Scot and me helping me to blend the controls and adjust to my taste. Nicer people, so helpful you couldn’t meet. He builds them when you order. I had mine in 1 week. Keep pickin’ guys and gals.

Dear Mr. Buffington: I’m still getting acquainted with this SE 300. Can’t say much more than this though: what is coming out of the amp is as clean and pure as I can imagine at the basic settings you recommended. As I mentioned I like to take my time in exploring the settings. It is getting the “warm” real nicely though. I have noticed it doesn’t take much of any knob turn to take you somewhere else. In other words lots of possibilities. I have noticed the buff and body settings might take you toward a kind of a Curly Chalker context for instance. Or you can certainly go lonesome pine high end if you want on the money neck. And most anything in between I expect. Still poking around. I’ll keep you posted. And thanks again for steel guitar amplifiers “family style” Best Wishes to you and yours George I have a Sho Bud 1977 Pro II ( III prototype ?) and pedal bought back when they were new and I have some Telonics pick ups in it currently.
